I would like to say I’m looking forward to performing the role as Chairman and I’m keen to work with everyone to support Margery Naylor, the Regional Commissioner, and her team in delivering great Scouting across the Region.

I am at the start of a steep learning curve and am now in the process of understanding what’s currently happening and what the priorities are. Please bear with me as I settle in and find my feet! 

There are a few things, however, that I would just like to let you know about:

Firstly, the reporting lines for Regional staff. Please note that with immediate effect, I have agreed that Colin Hyslop, Regional Treasurer, will be the first point of contact and line manager for Gillian Fraser, Regional Operations Manager, and her team.  Any issues concerning the staff or other matters at Bonaly should therefore be referred to Colin in the first instance.

Secondly, I can confirm that Valleyfield Street has now been sold and the Regional Training Team has a new store and training venue in Miller Hall, 2 Nether Liberton Lane, EH16 5TY. The Region’s archives will still be stored in Valleyfield Street and the Gang Show still has use of some of the space there also. Separate arrangements have been made with the new owners to facilitate this use.

Lastly, you will probably be aware that Bonaly lost its toilet block to a fire earlier in the year and discussions have been ongoing to consider how this could be replaced as part of a longer term Regional development plan. I can now update you that plans will shortly be submitted to the City of Edinburgh Planning Department to seek permission to erect a new amenity block on the site nearer to the camping areas that would incorporate toilets & showers. I should stress that this is the beginning of a lengthy process and any decisions to progress to build will require planning consent and further approval from the Executive committee.  In the meantime an interim or temporary solution is being sought to ensure toilet & shower facilities are on site for the start of the new season.
