Scouts Expedition Weekend 25-26 September 2021

The six oldest Scouts from the Thursday night Scout section of 1st North Berwick Scout Group set off on an adventure at the end of September to achieve their Expedition Award. For many of them, this was also the last requirement to be awarded the prestigious Chief Scout’s Gold Award.

Having previously planned the route, the equipment, the food and the camp, they embarked from North Berwick by train, independently arranging their accessibility requirements as one of their team uses a wheelchair. They negotiated their way through Waverley station (pausing only for essential Bubble Tea refreshments) and out into the city.

They travelled by foot and wheelchair through the city, using both map and online route planners, meeting their support team a couple of hours later to switch onto bikes. They then navigated the Sustrans National Cycle Network to pedal to their destination in the grounds of the South Queensferry Scout Hut (huge thanks to the 21st Craigalmond Scouts for permission to camp).

The group reported on their expedition as they went, making use of a private Instagram account to keep parents and leaders updated and entertaining them with photos and live-streams of their journey.

The weather couldn’t have been kinder to them across the whole weekend and they spent a pleasant evening barbecuing and recovering! After breakfast and a thorough tidy-up, they were off again, walking back through the suburbs of Edinburgh to their final destination on Corstorphine Hill, to be greeted with cake, awards and congratulations from parents and leaders.

We are so proud of our team of Scouts. They showed tenacity, skill and teamwork across a challenging weekend – they pulled together and got everyone to the final destination safe and sound and still smiling (albeit a little tired!). Explorers awaits!
