Army Youth Challenge June 2022 – Expression of Interest

Introduction – please complete by Monday 2 May 2022

Welcome to the South East Scotland Scouts Army Youth Challenge planned for the weekend of June 18/19, 2022 (non-residential). This is a collaborative event between the Army and South East Scotland Scouts.

This is a brand-new event aimed at Scouts aged 12+ as of the date of the event and all Explorers across the South East Scotland Scouts region. It is a Youth Development fun weekend, including some of the badges/modules the Army supports as part of our Scouting programme. This is delivered via meaningful, educational, and experiential activities.

Please can each DC, if possible, in consultation with your GSLs and DESCs, complete the below ‘Expression of Interest’ form by Monday 2 May 2022 . Your replies will enable the planning team to evaluate the level of interest and involvement in this event and ensure the next stage of planning will provide the best event experience for the young people. Thank you.

Please note – a ‘no reply’ indicates the answer is not interested so it is important to complete this please.

Why are we organising this event?

1. Add to the young people’s learning portfolio and develop skills for life with invaluable Army experience.
2. By developing Scouts knowledge, and personal skills which contribute to our communities, helping them be the best they can be and preparing them for the challenges ahead in life and employment. Specific skill focus e.g. resilience, confidence, leadership skills, communication, teamwork, organization, problem solving, etc based on the programme.

3. Based on living and acting by the Scouts values and achieving specific Scouts badges e.g The Scouts Mechanic activity badge can be achieved on the day, and the Army training can start Explorers working towards their Explorers Leadership Badge.

Numbers?

There will be a limit each day based on Army capabilities. Up to 80 Scouts/Explorers on day 1 (Saturday) with a second different set of up to 80 Scouts/Explorers on day 2 (Sunday) ie the activities will be repeated on day 2. So a total of 160 South East Scotland Scouts/Explorers can take part.

We anticipate 11 participants can take part per day from each District therefore an allocation of 22 places per District over two days.

Where and when?

Dreghorn Training Area, Edinburgh. Estimated timings are – 8am arrival with c6pm departure.

Programme?

The exciting programme includes a series of 8 outdoor and adventures activities run in partnership with the Army. A full programme would be shared. The Army are responsible for delivering the programme however to facilitate the smooth running and support we require 2 adult volunteers per District per day please. The event will not be possible without this.

Cost for young people?

Nominal fee to be agreed but likely to be circa £10.00pp to cover badges/expenses/costs.
