Bonaly Scout Centre Update

International Summer

It’s been busy this summer at Bonaly and it’s been great to welcome back international Scouting. We have had visitors from The Netherlands, Germany, France, Poland, Ireland, England and of course Scotland! Many groups hold their weeklong summer camps with us and it’s great to see lots of young people enjoying Edinburgh and Scotland for the first time.

Ken’s Den

Our new accommodation area is progressing nicely. Situated where the old tipi/bell tent area used to be, Ken’s Den will have indoor accommodation for 20 young people in two huts and a two bed leaders room. There is also a covered cooking area, fire pit and picnic tables. We‘re not quite ready for bookings yet as there is still some work needed, but full details will be in next month’s newsletter.

This was only made possible thanks to the lasting legacy to Ken Thomson via a memorial fund.

Can you ESCAPE?

ESCAPE! is Bonaly’s brand new self-led activity. Made up of five problem-solving challenges to test teamwork skills. Do you have what it takes to complete all five and escape?

First, The Vortex must be negotiated and there is only one safe route!

Next is Shark Island and if you survive, the Spiders’ Web must be tackled.

Now, the Unexploded Bomb must be defused before you attempt to cross the Acid Lake to freedom.

ESCAPE! will be available from September 2022 and is suitable for Cubs and older.

Explorers Halloween Survival Weekend 29th – 30th October

Explorers will be challenged to survive the spooky Halloween weekend!

They will be sleeping out without tents, cooking backwoods style and trying not to be too scared! There will be survival skills workshops running throughout the weekend and these will include natural cordage, advanced fire lighting and backwoods cooking techniques.

And there’s more! There will also be the opportunity to share your survival skills with other Explorers, and of course – ghost stories around the campfire.  Places are limited, for more information and to register an interest – please email events@bonaly.org.uk
