Wanted – District Commissioner for Midlothian

We now need a brilliant volunteer manager to take Scouting forward in Midlothian. As District Commissioner you will offer support to Scout Groups, while helping open new ones. You will manage adults, setting objectives and holding regular one-to-ones. Most importantly, you will ensure that Scouting offers an enjoyable and attractive programme for young people in Midlothian, helping prepare them for a bright future.

Although no Scouting experience is necessary, you will know how to motivate people and produce a local development plan and you will have the charisma to inspire your team. And you will be well supported by the Regional Leadership Team.  Above all, you will believe passionately in Scouting for All: helping Scouting grow, become more inclusive, more youth-shaped and make a positive impact in local communities.

It’s a challenging role, but the rewards are huge, improving the outcomes for thousands of young people.

Scouting offers fun, friendship and life-changing adventure to over 7,200 young people in South East Scotland Region. But this is only made possible by our talented teams of volunteers – and we hope you will become one of them!

Longcraig open for business

Longcraig is open for business!

After a bit of a madcap winter caused by some very inclement weather for much of the period, we have now got most of the boats, kayaks and other equipment ready for use once again on the Firth of Forth.

With a new online booking system, it is now much less complex to make a booking, see what’s available, and get your event booked up, or even to make changes to existing bookings!

So far this year, we have fitted in a Powerboat training course and two Dinghy Introductory training courses, with more to follow.

On Saturday 19 May, Longcraig Scout Centre is participating in a national activity day supported by the RYA, to encourage folks to come along and try a watersport. This year, we are aiming this specifically at adult members of Scouting (there will be a young persons event at a later opportunity!) so please check out the poster on the website and come along for some or all of the day. Aimed at complete novices or even those with a little water experience, it is an opportunity to try a variety of boats and activities so you can see for yourself what the young people get up to – without any young people getting in the way!  See full details.

Not until next year! But it’s time to think about it. If your Group, or anyone you have connections to, has a special anniversary next year we would like to know so we can share it and perhaps link it into our anniversary year programme. Youth Approved Award for Region

Youth Approved Award for Region

This month the Region achieved its Foundation Youth Approved award from Scouts Scotland. We are over the moon with this award and shall be displaying it on most of our future comms and putting the certificate in the reception of Bonaly.

For those of you not too familiar with the Youth Approved Award, the Region had to:

  1. Have a Regional Youth Advisory Group – and the fact that makes us even prouder about these extraordinary 13 young people is that they represent all 7 Districts giving a true spread of experience and opinions.
  2. Appoint a Youth Commissioner – Euan McFadzean was appointed at the first meeting and has been working his socks off supporting the group and working with the Districts and Scottish to involve more young people.
  3. Have a method of communicating with Young People – Social Media is our gateway to getting young people involved and getting information to them, and with this is mind we will be improving how we use social media to this end.

Above all, we must mention all the incredible Groups and Sections within our Region who have achieved Foundation and Bronze – we are so proud.

Audition Information for Scouting

The Edinburgh Gang Show is a major theatre production and has been staged annually at the King’s Theatre since 1960. The cast is made entirely of members of Scouting and Girlguiding and is supported behind the scenes by many adult volunteers. Being part of the Gang Show is great fun but hard work and a high level of commitment to the show is expected.

  • 1.45 – 3.00pm             All boys aged 10 years & over (by the Dress rehearsal on 19/11/18)

  • 3.45 – 5.00pm             Girls aged 11 years (by the Dress rehearsal on 19/11/18)

Membership of Main Gang

All individuals who wish to audition for Main Gang must be at least 10 years old at the date of the Dress Rehearsal (19/11/18) and an active member of a Guide Unit or Scout Group at that date. In addition, all who audition for Main Gang must also be an active member of the Guide and Scout Association at the date of the audition (a date which varies from year to year but this year is 13/05/18).

Older Brownies and Cubs at the date of the audition may become members of the Main Gang provided they meet the age and membership criteria by the date of the Dress Rehearsal.

Results of the auditions will be advised on the day.

If successful, further auditions for song, dance and sketches will take place in June with rehearsals commencing for Main Gang in late August. With the exception of a couple of dates, rehearsals will be held every Sunday from then through to show week. Cast members are expected to attend regularly and show a high level of commitment to the show.

After the auditions, a rehearsal schedule and a Registration Form (to be signed by a Section Leader) will be issued to those who have been successful, along with other information.

To aid with registration on the day please complete the Audition Form in advance and bring to the audition along with the Activity Information Form.

Note: Cubs do all performances.

Cubs must be at least 8 and a member of a Cub Pack at the date of the audition (a date which varies from year to year but this year is 27/05/18). As a member of Junior Gang, they must remain with their Pack until after the show week.

Cubs will be told the results of the auditions on the day. If successful, rehearsals will commence for Junior Gang in September.

Finding new leaders

Finding new leaders


1st North Berwick Recruitment Event

To find new leaders we arranged a Scout Information evening; advertised it widely; showcased our Group and emphasised the need for more help; explained waiting lists; took details from those attending; followed up with information and offers of support.  We now have six new leaders, whose enthusiasm has invigorated our existing team and greatly strengthened our Group.


Like many Groups across the Region, we are always in need of new leaders, with increasing waiting lists and changes in circumstances of existing leaders, so we decided to launch a recruitment event in June 2017. We did this to help us continue to provide the exciting, adventurous Scouting that we already do deliver with our young people on a weekly basis, and also to support our leaders in their roles and help them sustain their commitment by sharing with others the load and privilege of being a leader.
So what did we do?

  • First, we called our event a Scout Information Evening, instead of a recruitment event, to encourage people to attend.
  • We contacted all our existing membership and waiting-list parents.
  • We used every social media outlet locally e.g. Facebook groups for primary and secondary schools, residential community groups, newsletters, church announcements, personal contacts.
  • We placed posters advertising the Information Event throughout the High Street and all high-traffic areas in our town.
The evening

We arranged the meeting in our Scout hall where we had fantastic displays from every section with amazing pictures of varied activities and experiences.  These were hugely appreciated and a great source of discussion to help illustrate what it is we do in Scouting and how we deliver it in our Group.

Many of our Group Executive  and leaders from every section attended in uniform and hosted tea and coffee on arrival so people could chat with leaders and Exec members in an informal way.

We had a slideshow ongoing through the start of the evening to demonstrate the huge range of experiences on offer.

Nearly 40 people attended, which surprised me, but equally I was thrilled, as we had no idea if anyone might turn up.

I did a short presentation about 1st North Berwick Group, what our young people thought about our Scouting, what we needed, what was the reality of a child on our waiting list ever getting into their section due to huge demand and the capacity of leaders to meet that demand. I was very open and honest about the reality and the needs we had, and stated that by becoming a leader or an exec member their child would be offered a place in recognition of the time and commitment they were willing to offer by agreeing to an appointment for a minimum of two years.

I was clear about how many leaders we hoped for and about our desire to open a new Beaver colony as that was where we had the largest waiting list and said that we wanted to increase our Scouting provision locally with parental or other adult support, by recruiting new leaders to support existing section leaders.  Some of our leaders and Exec members spoke about their role and why they got involved, and gave an honest insight into what being this meant to them.

I reassured everyone that they didn’t need a Scouting background or to be Bear Grylls but stated that they did need to have a willingness to work in partnership with young people in our community and to learn and try new things.

All who attended completed an information form with details about their child/children, and what they as adults could offer to help our group, with options of weekly to termly commitments, by running activities, helping with trips, admin support for sections, getting involved in our Exec.  This meant that afterwards we had a register of who was there and it also gave people a chance to consider what they could offer after the Information Evening.

The evening closed with a question-and-answer session.


Then the hard work began as everyone who attended was e-mailed and thanked for their interest. Those who couldn’t attend but had been in touch by phone or e-mail were also sent an information sheet to complete. The offers of help were varied and it took some time to analyse who could do what and when, and match what they could offer with what we needed as a Group.

Then those who specifically offered some assistance were invited to meet up again for a short meeting to explore their offers to see if we could turn them into a reality. A more detailed explanation was given about the Appointment process along with reassurance that training and support would be available regardless of the role undertaken.

Bottom line

The event with subsequent follow-up resulted in 8 new potential leaders being identified but two subsequently withdrew as their circumstances had changed, so we successfully recruited 6 new leaders who now help deliver our Scouting on a weekly basis plus one person on a fortnightly basis. Their enthusiasm and fresh perspectives have invigorated and supported the existing teams and 1st North Berwick Group has grown in strength, size and profile within our town.
