Martin Elliot, Regional Commissioner, was delighted to join the Meadows Explorer Unit, part of the Braid District Scouts, recently to present a Commissioner’s Commendation Award to Lois, an Explorer Scout from the Unit.

What did Lois do to achieve the Commissioner’s Commendation Award?

Lois took part in a Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Silver Expedition and dug deep to overcome the extreme heat in very hot weather conditions. The following weekend she supported a person with additional support needs who were doing their own DofE Bronze Expedition.

In August 2022, South East Scotland Explorer Expeditions (SEEE) ran a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) Bronze Expedition Qualifier in the Pentland Hills for a group of Explorer Scouts, some of whom have specific additional support needs.

The following weekend, Lois took part in a gruelling DofE Silver Expedition Qualifier in the Lowther Hills, with temperatures in the 30s over challenging terrain. Despite this, she willingly volunteered to provide one-on-one support to another Explorer who has additional support needs and was taking part in the Bronze Expedition, giving up her whole weekend to do this.

What did the Team say about Lois?

The Expedition Leader team were hugely impressed by Lois’s approach to helping her fellow Explorer, displaying the values of Scouting by providing encouragement, advice and physical support when required in a mature manner way beyond her age.

Lois’s dedication and commitment to supporting a fellow Explorer during the Expedition is commended and Martin was pleased to be able to recognise this by way of the Commissioner’s Commendation Award.
