DofE Expeditions News

Quick links

Congratulations to all the South East Scotland Explorers and Network members who have completed their DofE Qualifying expeditions with SEEE  (South East Explorer Expeditions) this season at Silver and Gold: 60 hillwalking, and 45 paddling. There were also 20 Bronzes, plus the expeditions (mainly Bronze, some Silver) run by Units or Districts.

Locations for expeditions included Loch Venachar for our Practices and Lochs Lomond, Tay & Awe for Qualifying Expeditions, providing paddlers with opportunities to camp on islands, beaches and even in ruined castles.  Projects undertaken by the teams have included making guides to canoe expeditions, studies of the natural- and historical-environments, and even recreating movie trailers!

Canoeing provides a different perspective on expedition journeying & DofE projects and gives young people the opportunity to learn new skills in a teamworking environment.

Basic training and Bronze expeditions took place the Pentlands. The Silvers and the Gold practices were held in the Lammermuirs and the Lowther Hills, and the Gold Qualifiers did a circuit from Bridge of Orchy into Glen Lyon.

The walkers supported each other in their teams through these wild and often remote areas, surprising themselves by how well they managed to cope with the unexpected using traditional Scouting skills. The campsites were often very beautiful, and the views were impressive.

Completing Bronze, Silver and Gold

The Expedition is only one section of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and candidates also do Physical, Skill and Volunteering sections, plus a Residential for Gold only.  Congratulations are, therefore, also due to those who have completed one or more levels of the Award in our Region over the last year: 80 Bronze; 48 Silver; 8 Gold.

All Silvers and Golds should make sure they do their presentation to complete the expedition section.  Those who are still working on the other sections are encouraged to record what they have done and get their Assessor’s reports so that they can move on to the next level

Expeditions next year

At SEEE we are already planning for next year, and will shortly announce what will be available.  We intend to offer Hillwalking and also, at Silver and Gold only, Canoe and Bike expeditions.  It should be noted that there may be a limit on the places available, so Explorers should register their interest as soon as possible after registration opens.

Thanks to adults
We would like to express our sincere thanks to the many adults who have contributed to this year’s expeditions, which could not have taken place without your input.
