Longcraig opportunities

Christmas Greetings

Longcraig would like to wish all our ‘boaties’ a very merry Christmas and an enjoyable holiday period, whatever you get up to. And this extends out to everyone else who didn’t make it down to Longcraig this year, as well as others who did get some fun time on the water in other ways.

Just as a reminder to Santa, that as well as our very own Scout Shops Limited, other local retailers who stock watersports equipment and accessories also offer discounts and special terms for Scouts:

Go Outdoors: https://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/
Tiso: Tiso Edinburgh Outdoor Experience | Tiso who are celebrating 60 years of supplying exciting outdoor clothing and equipment this year;
Cotswolds: Outdoor Clothing & Equipment | Cotswold Outdoor

All of these outlets have special offers available for Christmas starting with the Black Friday ones which often last much longer than just one day. And they all have things that can fit in a Christmas stocking!

Winter learning opportunities at Longcraig

A quick reminder about two winter training opportunities that are on offer over the coming dark months:

RYA VHF Radio Course
One weekend, covers the necessary training to lead to a Marine Radio Short Range Certificate – this is the minimum that people should have to be able to operate a Marine VHF radio, whether a hand held one or a fixed unit in a small boat.

In the first instance, please indicate your interest by email to: getinvolved@longcraig.info

The venue would normally be at Longcraig Scout Centre, but, depending on our facilities improvement work schedule, we may operate it at an alternative venue, to be advised to anyone who expresses interest.

RYA Small Boat First Aid Course
A regular First Aid course but with a specific boating perspective, such as more attention to things like hypothermia, how to carry out CPR in confined spaces, etc.

The course is typically a one day course and offers an alternative to other first aid course, it meets and exceeds the requirements of first aid learning for adult leaders, Explorers, Young Leaders etc. It is also approved by the MCA (Marine and Coastguard Agency) for people working or operating in a marine environment.

As above, please get in touch to register an interest, we will operate at least one course over the winter and can arrange more if there is sufficient demand.

The plans and approvals for the long awaited facility upgrades at Longcraig are now at the final stages of review and approval from the final decision makers. As soon as this step is concluded, we will be in a position to engage with building contractors and start the work over the winter months so we are ready to re-open in the spring with a significantly modernised Centre.

Whilst Longcraig’s main purpose is for the provision of water activities and everything associated with that, the land facilities can also be an excellent choice for a section or group gathering. We’ve seen the centre used for Group Barbeques, AGM’s, as a training venue, and quite recently as a photoshoot venue (apparently we have some very attractive bridges close by). The Centre also has two meeting rooms upstairs which can accommodate up to around 25 – 30 people in each, so can be a venue for planning meetings, training, conferences and such like. These can all be supported by refreshments, catering facilities and of course, you can’t argue about the view from outside!

Subject to availability, the facilities can also be hired by other community groups, workplaces or other organisations!

Please just drop us an email for further details or to discuss your requirements: Getinvolved@longcraig.info

Over the winter months, we are holding a number of opportunities for potential volunteers to drop in and see what we do.

All we ask is that you pre-register with us so we know how many are likely to come along (and we can arrange the necessary facilities/resources)

The dates set up for this are as follows:

                Sunday 12 February

                Saturday 25 March

These meetings will be held at 12.00 on each day, starting off with soup and sandwiches, followed by some brief presentations and an opportunity to discuss what we do and how we do it. And, more importantly, how you might fit in to that too! And we will have people on hand to answer any questions that you may have too!

Please simply contact us at getinvolved@longcraig.info with your preferred meeting date and your contact details.

We’ll take care of the rest!

Longcraig continues to seek and attract funds to help with building improvements, with replacement or upgraded boats and equipment, and to support training for all ages.

For example, every year we aim to:

  • Replace around 8 of our buoyancy aids as they wear out
  • Replace/repair a quarter of our wetsuits
  • Replace 6 kayak paddles
  • Repair sails for our sailing boats, and buy new sails on average on per year

Other more substantial things that are top of our hit list are:

  • A new outboard engine for one of our safety boats (we mustn’t have unreliable old engines on safety critical equipment)
  • A replacement tractor (the little orange one that pulls boats up and down our pier) which is also essential to our efficient operations.

We have a team that is hard at work throughout the year, working alongside the Region’s Fund Raising Team, to help realise our goals.

And you can help too! We’re not asking you to dip into your pockets – we’re pretty certain lots of other groups and organisations do a  great job at that! But what we can offer is an opportunity to help support our funds simply by doing what you do on an everyday basis – and that is ordering goods and services online. We’ve teamed up with Easyfundraising, and recently we surpassed the sum of £500 raised by this method – but we can all help do so much more!

Easyfundraising works with over 7000 retailers and service providers who are willing to make donations to charities (such as ourselves) every time a customer makes an online order. It doesn’t cost anything extra for the customer – indeed there are sometimes special offers and additional discounts available – but every order with a signed-up retailer can help.

Please remember to use easyfundraising every time you shop online! Over 7,000 brands will donate, so you can raise FREE donations for us no matter what you’re buying. These donations really help us out, so please sign up if you haven’t yet. It’s easy and FREE! You can get started  – click here.

It may be that you are already signed up with Easyfundraising for other organisations. That’s OK, you can also join up to support Longcraig – but you will need to register with a different email address! Then you can share any donations between ‘the other one’ and Longcraig simply by making a selection when you log in.

Raising funds through Easyfundraising is not just something for Leaders and other adult members to get involved with – this can be shared around ALL of your parents, group supporters, indeed EVERYONE you know!

And we’re here to help if you need it! Please get in touch with our email address at getinvolved@longcraig.info if you have any questions. Or you can phone or text on 07565 593785 if you prefer.
