Vacancies: Explorer leader and assistant leader roles

Explorers have been one of the success stories of the last few years with numbers doubling since before the pandemic. Over that time two new units were opened in Pentland to address demand taking us to 4. We are thriving however unfortunately we have a growing waiting list that we are unable to service, and that is just the Scouts trying to move up. We are keen to expand our team – can you help?

Both
Borestane (who cover Bruntsfield/Tollcross/Marchmont/Polwarth areas and meet at Bruntsfield Evangelical Church) and Tower (who cover the entire District and meet at the Bonaly Scout Centre) are in need of new faces – Assistants and Leaders, please. The future of both units remains uncertain until we can secure more adult volunteer support.

Come and join us – we are looking for adult volunteers to join in our awesome fun.

Borestane Explorers:

-General location: Bruntsfield, Tollcross, Marchmont and Polwarth in Edinburgh
-Meeting place: Bruntsfield Evangelical Church, EH13 0JT but they are mostly ‘out’
-When: Friday at 7.30pm-9.30pm

Tower Explorers:

-General location: Across the Pentland District
-Meeting place: Bonaly Scout Centre, EH13 0PB but again ‘out’ mostly
-When: Tuesday at 7.30pm-9.30pm

The good news is that Explorers are encouraged to lead themselves. We need adult support and guidance to keep them on track. Simples!

When it comes to Explorers, it’s the Explorers who are in charge – deciding what they do and when they do it. It’s about finding out who they are and what they’re capable of, from rafting down white water rapids, trekking in the Himalayas to building a school in Africa.  This is your chance to help transform an Explorer Unit.

Can you help lead or support an Explorer Unit as an adult volunteer please?

With such growing numbers, scouting enables more young people and adults than ever to take part in an exciting range of activities, boost their personal skills, gain friends and make a positive difference in the world around them.

If you are interested in helping young and enthusiastic people reach their full potential – while having a lot of fun along the way – volunteering with the Explorer Scouts may be for you. Explorers is led by adult volunteers who are on hand to share their skills and keep everyone safe. Get in touch to find out more.

Flexible volunteering is available – job share.

We’re looking for volunteers to support an exciting blended programme for Explorer Scouts. Members of our Explorer Leadership team will help plan, resource & deliver the Explorer Programme using instructor-led, parent-led and young person-led delivery. We are specifically looking for Explorer Scout Assistant Leaders and Leaders to join our Team. People who are passionate about giving young people a voice. You are an enabler: supporting young people to pursue their interests and push their boundaries. You will encourage the young people to lead themselves, with your support and guidance. This will help you gain valuable leadership skills and experience in volunteering.

Enthusiasm, empathy with young people and a sense of humour are a must. But we can teach you the rest! We’ll support you all the way and ensure you get the training and support you need. Scouting offers fun, friendship and life-changing adventure but this is only made possible by our talented teams of volunteers.

There is no doubt that you will already have knowledge and experience that will complement the provided training. Even if you have never worn a Woggle in your life and are a complete Scouting novice. You can still volunteer as an Explorer Leader. No specific skills or qualifications are initially required although enjoyment of working with young people and a sense of fun are essential. If you have some Scouting experience, that would be useful.

This a FANTASTIC opportunity to bring this provision to the young people of the Pentland area meaning more and more young people can benefit.
  • * Fun and friendship with like minded volunteers who enjoy adventure!
  • * On-going support and mentoring within your new role
  • * We have an award-winning training scheme for our volunteers so you get as much from it as our amazing young people, including practical skills like first aid and transferable skills like communication and leadership
  • * CV boosting and employability skills
  • * Access to excellent equipment and facilities
  • * Generous activities budget
  • * Practical and online resources, help and advice for planning future activities, adventures, trips and programme ideas

Adult volunteers, the amazing benefits!

You do not need to have any prior scouting experience to get involved in Scouting and volunteer – everyone is welcome

Getting involved as an adult volunteer is hugely rewarding, and we offer a range of different roles depending on your interests.

The good news is you shape what you do and decide how much time you give. Scouts happens when a lot of us give a little (and no, you don’t have to be a Scout or outdoors expert to volunteer).

Scouts is needed now more than ever. The pandemic hit our young people hard – with two thirds saying is impacted on their mental health. Having people positive role models to guide the way, and give that extra bit of encouragement is so important in times like these. We help young people step up, speak and find their place in the world. We help them gain skills for life.
