Two very special Silver Acorns were recognised at the 104th Edinburgh North East.
Isla Robertson (nee Johnston) presented her father, Jimmy Johnston’s, Silver Acorn to Steve Hall, Group Scout Leader, at the AGM of the 104th Edinburgh North East Scout Group, formerly 4th Leith (St Serf’s), Jimmy’s old Group. Jimmy had received the award in 1983 after a lifetime in Scouting, attending World Jamborees at Arrow Park, Birkenhead (1929), and Holland (1937), participating in Rover Crew shows, serving as a warranted Leader for 35 years and then as District Chairman and Hon Vice President. He also chauffeured B-P’s son, Lord Peter Baden-Powell, when he opened the 4th Leith Scout Hall in South Trinity Road in 1957!
The Hall has a plaque to Jimmy and his lifelong friend in Scouting, Douglas Scott, who also received the Silver Acorn in 1983. A replica of his award was also presented to the 104th through the generosity of the North East District. Duggie’s link with the 4th spanned almost 70 years as Scout, Rover (stage managing and producing the famous Rover Crew variety shows), ASM, SM, GSM, member of the B-P Guild and Chair of the Group Executive. He was also Leith District DSM, ADC (General Duties) and Executive Member for over 30 years being awarded the Medal of Merit in 1961.
