Our Volunteer Stories
South East Scotland Scouts is full of ordinary people making an extraordinary difference to young people’s lives and learning a whole lot along the way.
Read their stories and find the perfect volunteer role for yourself. Whether you want to work with young people directly or help behind the scenes, there’s something for everyone at Scouts.
Whichever way you volunteer, you will end up making a huge difference to young people’s lives. Gifting them with skills for life, and learning a whole lot about themselves along the way.
To find out more about volunteering with the Scouts or to have an informal chat about how your skills could help young people develop the skills for life we offer, please contact us on hello@sesscouts.org.uk
Before taking on this volunteering role, I had never been part of the Scouting movement before!
I get to help young people get a sense of achievement by earning badges, helping in their community and working as a team.
Camps are always a hoot. Especially the multi-section ones where there are loads of activities going on such as zip-lining, campfires and tug o war.
As I work for the emergency services, my job is often unpleasant, stressful or even traumatic, and Beavers is a great pressure valve to counteract that.
Seeing Beavers grow in confidence is fantastic but for me, watching my Young Leaders with the Beavers, growing in confidence themselves and learning new skills is just as important.
As the world was opening up again, I was looking around for something to do. The pandemic left many feeling isolated from their communities and I was no different.
Naturally, when I was old enough and when asked if I wanted to help out at the Cubs, I jumped at the chance, admittedly nervously.
As well as having had lots of fun I have learned a huge amount since taking up the role and scouting has enhanced my life in lots of ways.
Everyone is welcome no matter your background. We have young people of different nationalities, cultures and different promises.
Volunteering has helped to expand my skillsets, within each role. It offers a chance to meet other enthusiastic volunteers from all walks of life.
I felt an instant connection with the Scouting values and the skills it promotes so I decided to join the movement straight away..
I couldn’t be more excited to see what this year brings for myself, the other Leaders, and all the young people at my group.
Creating a new site from scratch was something new for me and I loved it. I learned so much along the way.
I work a busy day job with a fair degree of responsibility. Volunteering with Scouts is a great release.
It’s #GoodForYou. Volunteering’s not just about giving back, it improves your wellbeing, gives you skills for the future, and helps you make new friends
