You’ve probably seen emails from Gilwell about changes to training requirements. Getting Started now MUST be completed within 5 months of the appointment start date, but the good news is that almost all can be done online, and better yet, all the online resources are in one place on the Scout website, https://www.scouts.org.uk/volunteers/learning-development-and-awards/getting-started-training/
There are changes to what is required for various roles, but in summary:
- All of Getting Started must be completed within 5 months of the role start date.
- Every adult member (not PVG only) needs to do the following, all are available online and no further validation is required:
- Essential Information
- Safety
- Safeguarding
- GDPR
- Section Leaders, Assistant Leaders and Section Assistants also need:
- Personal Learning Plan (usually blank apart from Getting Started for Section Assistants)
- Tools for the Role (Section Leaders).
- GSLs, Deputy GSLs, DCs, Deputy DCs, ADCs, DESCs, ARCs, ASU Managers etc. also need:
- Personal Learning Plan
- Tools for the Role (Managers and Supporters).
- Executive Committee members (including Section Leaders who sit on Group Execs) also need:
- Trustee Introduction.
Tools for the Role – both varieties – can be done online, via Zoom or similar, or can (when we’re green) be done face to face. Your Assistant DC (Adult Training) will be able to share local plans with you.
It’s not strictly a training issue, but to move your role to Full you also need to have satisfactory references, PVG and Appointments Committee approval within the first 5 months. If your District Appointments Secretary has been in touch about any of these please do get back to them.
Gilwell are really pushing on compliance with completion requirements for Getting Started, Safety, Safeguarding and GDPR, so if these are not up to date, or your PLP, Essential Information and Tools for the Role are not validated in Compass PLEASE speak to your Training Adviser, GSL, or ADC (Adult Training) for help with moving it forwards. Ignoring the emails from Tim Kidd is not an option.
For those who have Full appointments, the next challenge for most roles is the Wood Badge. It should be completed within 3 years of appointment start date, so if the clock is ticking, or you are already over 3 years please have a look to see what’s outstanding and how you can fill the gaps. SHQ has produced a guide to validation while we’re in some form of lockdown, have a look and see what you can validate now https://www.scouts.scot/media/2310/validation-guides.pdf
I think every district in the Region is short of Training Advisers, so if you know anyone who’s good at communicating with adults please point them towards the Assessing Learning module on 20th October. I’m not saying it’s popular, but I see someone from Carnoustie has booked a place! We also have a Region-wide shortage of training Advisers for Managers and Supporters (TAMS), so if you would like to help support people new to these roles please let me know.
If you have questions please contact your ADC (Adult Training) in the first instance – they are all full of useful information.
