When the Regional Leadership Team and Regional Executive Committee ran a consultation for all members across South East Scotland in 2018, members fed back clearly that they valued the Regional Centre at Bonaly but also wanted to see it more effectively meet the needs of Scouting within the Region. Thus, in April 2019 a 5-year plan was created for the renamed Bonaly Scout Centre, with a review to take place after the first 12 months.

This review coincided with the start of the COVID-19 lockdown, which has significantly impacted all outdoor centres, including Bonaly, and resulted in its temporary closure. A small Bonaly review team (BRT) was established by the Regional Executive Committee and has, over the last few months, been considering the options available to keep Bonaly operational both in the short term, as we hopefully see the impact of COVID reduced and eliminated, and also creating a medium to longer term plan for its operation.

This plan has been agreed by the Regional Executive Committee. As it will impact on the staff and volunteers at Bonaly, we are now entering a period of consultation with them. Until this is completed we are unable to share the details of the plan but hope to be able to do so next month.

Whilst this is an unsettling time for the team at Bonaly, we would like to acknowledge their professionalism and support during the review period.

Bonaly Scout Centre is recognised as a valuable Regional asset for Scouting and remains at the heart of South East Scotland Region. The plan that has been created aims to ensure that Bonaly remains an exciting place for young people and leaders to visit and to undertake their Scout-focussed outdoor programme going forward, continuing to provide the opportunities for fun and adventure that many members have experienced during visits to the centre over the years.

We will keep members updated on the review process through e-mail, the Regional website and our social media channels, including opportunities for members to get involved in shaping the future of Bonaly. If you have any questions with regards to Bonaly please contact the Regional Communications Group via Martin Elliot, Deputy Regional Commissioner.
