You wait for a bus and two come along at once!
That’s what’s happening in East Lothian Scout District Explorers just now.
We have TWO vacancies available for adults and young people:
Explorers are East Lothian’s go-getting group of young people aged 14 to 18. Together, they make up the fourth section of our Scout Family. Week in and week out, they gather in groups called Units to try new things, make new friends and conquer the small task of changing the world.
Being an Explorer is all about discovering the world on your own terms and making the most of what you have, wherever and whoever you are. Alongside your new friends, you’ll master the skills that will make you feel stronger and happier in the long run, and try things you’d never get the chance to do at home or at school.
Whether you’re hiking to faraway lands or building a robot in your local town hall, you’ll have the freedom to choose what you’d like to do, and work together with adults to make it happen.
To make this happen we need the support of a new District Explorer Scout Administrator (DESA) and District Explorer Scout Leader (Young Leader- ESYL).
Role 1: District Explorer Scout Administrator (DESA)
The District Explorer Scout Administrator has an important role to play in Explorer Scouting in the District. He or she is the hub of communication, maintaining a free flow of information across the District to ensure that every Explorer Scout has access to the full District Explorer Scout programme. It is rewarding as you’ll see your efforts transformed into better and better Explorer Scouting for more and more young people. You must be aged 18+ to be considered for this role.
The DESA may hold another appointment which involves a leadership role, but many will not. You will need to be an organised and efficient person, with the ability to maintain a good working relationship with a number of people.
DEADLINE – MAY 25TH
Role 2: District Explorer Scout Leader (Young Leader – ESYL)
We are looking for an Adult volunteer Leader to lead our District Explorer Scout Young Leader Unit. Explorer Scout Young Leaders are Explorers who volunteer alongside adult leaders in a Beaver Colony, Cub Pack or Scout Troop. They’re a valuable asset to any leadership team and play an active role in the section, bringing a range of fresh ideas to the table and acting as positive role models for the young people they work alongside. All Young Leaders in the Beaver, Cub and Scout section who are between the ages of 14 and 18 must be members of a Young Leaders Unit.
The Explorer Scout Leader (Young Leader) is the Section Leader for an Explorer Scout (Young Leader) Unit. They are responsible for developing and ensuring quality training and supervision of Young Leaders within the District. This includes ensuring that this provision is open to all Explorer Scouts in the District. This may be done with the help of Assistant Leaders, Section Assistants, and members of Scout Active Support as appropriate. Some of the tasks for which the Explorer Scout Leader (Young Leader) is responsible may be delegated to others in the Unit, including Assistant Leaders and Section Assistants.
DEADLINE – MAY 25TH
“Like any leader within the team, ESYLs bring their own unique skills and strengths to the group, which can be utilised to deliver a high quality, balanced programme. ESYLs are passionate about giving young people a voice. They are enablers: supporting young people to pursue their interest and push their boundaries.”
Hilary Cartwright, District Commissioner (DC), East Lothian
“The DESA is a key link between Scouts aged 13 and over with Explorers providing vital information, support, moving on information, and communication. He or she will build upon our successes to date to positively contribute to our continued growth in East Lothian Scout District.”
Hilary Cartwright, District Commissioner (DC), East Lothian
If you are curious about the role, why not read Aileen Hesketh’s volunteer experience as she explains her scouting experience as the Craigalmond District Scout Appointments Secretary.
What does a DESA do? The answer to that is as much or as little as you want.
“Scouting gave me an escape from work, taught me new skills and introduced me to lots of new people, many of whom have become lifelong friends.” says Aileen

And if you’re reading this thinking that it all sounds quite exciting and something you’d quite enjoy doing, but maybe you’re worried about the timing or you might think there is someone else who would be better for the role, ask yourself if not me, then who? If not now, then when?
