As a voluntary movement, adults and young people make a conscious decision to join and to stay with Scouts for a variety of reasons. The growth of Scouting is about giving more adults and young people the opportunity to enjoy the experience of scouting.
So, to provide further opportunities for existing members to grow with Scouts in East Lothian and to be open and welcoming to new members, East Lothian Scout District is delighted to announce we have a vacancy for a new Appointments Secretary.
Believe it or not you don’t have to work directly with young people to volunteer with Scouts! This role is ideal for anyone new to Scouting or existing members who can continue to be in their current position as well as take up this rewarding District role if they wish.
The role at glance: We’re looking for an enthusiastic and organised individual to take on this key role of Appointments Secretary for our Scout District. You’ll be responsible for all new District appointments working with the Assistant Appointments Secretary to support new volunteers.
It’s an interesting and highly responsible administrative role. Training will be provided, and you will have the opportunity to shadow the current Appointments Secretary before taking on the role before he leaves.
“The Appointments Secretary plays a pivotal role in welcoming new volunteers to Scouts in East Lothian and supporting new volunteers get started on their volunteer journey. As an Appointments Secretary you will often be the one responsible for moving the appointment smoothly through the process, ensuring that approval checks are completed in an appropriate time frame.” Hilary Cartwright, District Commissioner (DC), East Lothian.
The Appointments Secretary role is critical to the East Lothian Scout District team as Graham White is leaving late February 2022 after being in position for 5 years. We sincerely thank Graham for all he has done for Scouting in East Lothian, his dedication and commitment. He provided a friendly warm welcome to many of our existing volunteers.
This role is to ensure that the required administration is carried out in support of the District Appointment Chair and Advisory Committee and the District Commissioner. Working with the Assistant Appointment Secretary, the Appointments Secretary will help to convene District appointment interviews, seek references, update Compass records for District Team members and advise on appointment reviews.
What’s in it for you?
* This experience will be a great asset for your professional life and CV as well as in Scouts.
If you are curious about the role, why not read Norrie Allan’s volunteer experience as he explains his scouting experience as the Borders District Scout Appointments Secretary. He says about the best things he has done in Scouts: “…putting processes in place to keep the appointment wheels turning and under control in the District.”
