Every August, Edinburgh Castle becomes the stage for one of the most spectacular shows on earth. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo draws 217,000 people to the Castle Esplanade over three weeks — and reaches a television audience of 100 million across the world. There is nothing quite like it.And for over 75 years, Scouts have been part of making it happen.
A tradition that started in 1950
South East Scotland Scouts have been involved with the Tattoo since the very first show. Every year, Explorer Scouts and Young Leaders take their place on the Esplanade — selling programmes to the Tattoo's home and international audience as they find their seats, the castle walls lit up behind them, the pipes already audible in the distance.
It is, genuinely, one of those nights you don't forget.
What you'll be doing
As a programme seller, you'll be working on the Castle Esplanade in the heart of the action — meeting audiences from across Scotland, the UK, and the world before each performance begins. It's an active, social role that puts you at the centre of one of Edinburgh's biggest events of the year. You'll also be raising funds directly for your Scout group, and the experience counts toward DofE and badge work.As a thank you, every volunteer receives a unique gift from the Tattoo itself.

The Tattoo runs from 6th to 29th August 2026. You'll need to be available for approximately six or seven nights across the run.
Weeknights: on duty 7:15pm – 9:45pm
